Why get rattan lighting? And what should you pay attention to when choosing?

Today I will introduce you to rattan lights, which you can find not only in our e-shop but also come and feel them in our physical store. 

Rattan lights are a grateful home accessory and an investment in design not only for interior spaces but also for exteriors with a canopy, such as a terrace or winter garden. Rattan lights are elegant and timeless, and if you choose a manufacturer that values quality weaving, design, and material, I definitely recommend acquiring them.

In our store, we have lights from the Dutch manufacturer Raw Materials, and they definitely meet all of this. Until I saw their rattan lights, I wasn't much of a fan of rattan. I hadn't seen lights until then that I would use in projects for more modern spaces where I wanted to highlight elegance in combination with this natural material. 

Why choose rattan lights from us?

The production of these lights takes place by hand in specialized workshops designed for this purpose. Hand weaving is a skill that is passed down from generation to generation and must be appreciated. 

Color variations

Natural rattan has variations in coloring. Since it is a natural material, it is not bleached, so with natural rattan, you will find subtle color variations, which only emphasize the uniqueness of this material and fit perfectly into nature-inspired interiors - Scandinavian, modern urban, boho. However, it also produces lighting in colored black rattan, which has a solid black color and beautifully enhances an elegantly styled interior.

Sustainability

Last but not least, rattan is considered an eco-friendly material, which is a very relevant topic today. Fair manufacturers are looking for options for more sustainable materials, and rattan definitely belongs among them. Rattan is a purely natural resource. It is a long vine that can grow up to 100m in length. It grows quickly, meaning that rattan is a rapidly renewable natural resource. Compared to other materials, such as wood or metals, rattan requires less energy during processing. Rattan is often processed by hand, which also reduces the need for heavy industrial equipment and the energy required for its production. As a natural material, rattan is fully biodegradable, which means that at the end of its life, it can safely return to nature without creating long-term waste or pollution.

Social factor

An important factor is also the social issue. The harvesting of rattan often provides an important source of income for local communities in tropical areas. By supporting sustainable production and trade in rattan, these communities can be supported, which can lead to better protection of local ecosystems and support for social development. As a natural material, rattan is also fully biodegradable, which means that at the end of its life, it can safely return to nature without creating long-term waste or pollution.

What to think about and be careful of when choosing rattan lights? 

There are many rattan lights on the market, and believe me, there are differences among them. The main difference is in the price of the product, and it usually has its justification. Not all rattan is the same. It depends on the quality of the material and its processing, so be careful about that. Rattan is a durable and very long-lasting material, but only if it meets the criteria I described above. Feel the material, weigh the light, and take a close look at the weave. You will see the differences, and this is usually reflected in the price.

Choose a light that fits best into your interior in terms of size, shape, and overall design of the weave. Also select a color that matches, for example, the color of your table and chairs. In open spaces, also with the sofa. Are you more of a light or dark team? 

Also consider how high your ceilings are, whether a large light fixture in terms of height will be the right choice for you. Or whether you should choose a light fixture that is longer in width. 

Light diffusion is also important. For this, focus on the thickness of the rattan and the density of the weave. A smaller density will ensure greater light diffusion, while a greater density of the weave will provide more direct light. 

My tip for the end
